R.E.M.: Preservationists

Note: This is part of a series in which I categorize a public figure as either a “Preservationist” or “Not a Preservationist.”

The members of rock band R.E.M. have long been lauded by preservationists for their hometown efforts to revitalize downtown Athens, Georgia. In 1998 the were presented a preservation award by the University of Georgia Student Historical Preservation Organization. More recently in 2010, the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation presented the Phinizy Spalding Preservation Award to R.E.M. The Foundation produced a video about the group’s roots in Athens:

P.S. The members of R.E.M. are also fans of The Monkees; in fact, I recently spotted Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey at the Monkees’ 2013 Portland show. Therefore, they receive two huge “thumbs-ups” from me!
